As I look back at all of the years I have attended school, the one notable thing I was never taught was how to study. But after reading up on different strategies, I have compiled a short list of study tips that students may want to consider.
Start very early
Sure, you may have passed an exam after staying up all night cramming and drinking 2-4 cups of coffee to stay awake, but the stress and toll it takes on your mind and body is not worth it. Give yourself plenty of time to make sure you have covered and understand everything. If you have a syllabus that shows you the dates for the exams, ask the professor various questions concerning them so you may have an idea on how to tackle them early. Studying early for a 4-5 week away exam is less stressful then studying for an exam the week before.
Taking a break is important.
But it is how long to take a break that can be tricky. Take an hour here or there to stretch your legs, watch television, or grab a bite to eat. This will help you maintain focus when you return to the material and prevent fatigue. Turn on some music while you study. As long the music does not distract you from your studies, it can help encourage your brain to stay alert.
Try to think outside the textbook and look for outside resources.
Another book, particularly a book that is related to the author or is heavily referenced in the text you are reading, can help you better understand the text or explain a concept in a way that works for you.
Eat snacks, chew gun, and drink plenty of water.
Studying without nourishment will have an effect on you, as you will need plenty of energy to stay focused, especially on the day of an exam that you are taking. It is important for both body and mind.
Don’t Panic!
As intimidating as exams can be, going into them and even studying for them is not helpful at all. Before the test, take a deep breath and know that you’ve done everything you can to prepare, take your time, do not get upset and you’ll do fine.
These tips will hopefully improve you study habits. Exams can be freighting. But not knowing how to study for them can be worse.
