Put your lotion away; it’s not that type of article.
Porn films have been a guilty pleasure for many since the dawn of video cameras and recording devices. They used to end up on display shelves in the “Adult” sections of rundown video stores and now of course they are all over the Internet.
People look at the viewing of porn in many different ways. Often, the issue is seen as one of “morality,” particularly by those who refuse entirely to watch porn. Others don’t see it as a bad thing at all.
Photography major Grace Morchel, 22, from Jersey City, enthusiastically embraced the idea of viewing porn for the inexperienced. “I think it could be a great tool to learn from; it could even help people become more comfortable with sex. Especially to those who are inexperienced, sex is intimidating! But, it can also set unrealistic standards or expectations, so there’s definitely a fine line.”
While there may be debate about “when and where” one should watch porn, there is no secret about porn itself. It is a major part of our “entertainment” industry. Many people object to it because they think it is disgusting or degrading, especially towards women.
“Working in women’s health, I am somewhat desensitized to the topic of sex,” said Katherine Bendtsen, NJCU Alumni and bioethicist. “Sex is a natural part of life, but adult films differ significantly from sex. Adult films imitate sex and turn it into entertainment. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but we must recognize it for what it is. Adult films do not equal real sex.”
When considering the topic of adult films, it is important to see all sides of the issue. There has also been recent research in which professionals have looked at the effects that watching porn can have on you.
According to AskMen.com, “The University of Sydney found that those who have an excessive passion for porn were more likely to have severe social and relationship problems, and were more likely to lose their jobs and get in trouble with the law.”
But, how many of us are really addicted to watching porn? Watching porn is like gambling and drinking, so please watch responsibly.
