In the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry, it’s not often that a band emerges with a sound so unique, it captivates audiences and listeners alike. Polaroids is one band that has been making waves with the alternative and indie rock genres, thought-provoking lyrics, and mesmerizing live performances.
Polaroids started as a solo project in 2023, by Edgar Echeverria, a recent Media Arts graduate at NJCU during his last year at the university. The inspiration for the name, Polaroids, came as a reference to Phil Elvrum of The Microphones, an indie folk/rock band.
Edgar is in love with photography along with music and was experimenting with different methods at the time, such as film, disposables, and polaroids, wanting to make the polaroids and music go hand in hand, hence the name.
Locally formed in Hudson County, New Jersey, specifically in Jersey City, the band has been together for a year now. The current four-member band consists of Edgar Echeverria (Vocalist/songwriter), Jasmine De Leon (drums), Henry Vasquez (guitar), and Meyling Wong (bassist). They have performed at various venues in New Jersey and in New York, such as Barge Inn Tavern in Jersey City, The Local NY Hostel in Queens, and most recently at the Pearl Stock Music Festival at 902 Brewing Co.
Jasmine graduated with a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies, now working as a drum teacher at the university. Henry also fronts his local band, Pseudo City Limits. Meyling graduated with a master’s degree in music performance.
Alternative indie-rock is a vibrant and evolving genre that continues to shape the music landscape. From its roots in post-punk to its current diverse and experimental sound, alternative indie rock remains a powerful force in the music industry. As new artists and bands emerge, like Polaroids and the genre continues to evolve, one thing is for certain: alternative and indie rock will remain a driving force in the world of music. With their songs and live performances, you can feel the music and beats.
Growing up in Hudson County, NJ, Edgar was always surrounded by music. His interest and love for music has always been with him, and it’s a therapeutic outlet for him. “Growing up in a town like West New York, you’re bound to hear your mother blasting bachata at 8 am on Saturday while she cleans.”, said Echeverria.
As for their projects, the band is currently in the works for a new album. Their latest EP I’m Not Sure Who I Am, But I Know Who I’ve Been is available to listen to on all streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music, and to keep up with upcoming music and future shows, follow the band on Instagram @Polaroids.Noise.
