Shalini Kantayya spoke at New Jersey City University’s lecture series in Hepburn Hall on November 20.
This lecture focused on a very interesting topic: water.
Did you know that throughout the world more than half of the countries struggle with the availability of water? Kantayya’s main mission is to fight for human rights throughout the world. She advocates for this through her films and her film company, 7th Empire Media, has dedicated its productions to this goal.
The film presented was called “A Drop of Life.” It’s a sci-fi flick about water and how countries across the world are suffering and unable to get access to clean water. This film portrays a world in which water has to be gotten from an automatic pump through prepaid cards and when the money runs out, so does the water. This film helped raise awareness for more than 40 countries that do not have access to clean water. If you would like to see the film, there is a full version on YouTube.
Kantayya’s point is that the world is much bigger than we are. That means that we should focus less on material objects and be more concerned with the people around us. They need to be cared for too. As she stated in the lecture, she never expected this film to make the immense impact on the world that it did. The sheer thought that one small film could bring water to multiple countries around the world is simply amazing!
