Promising Student Killed
November 7, 2016
Syasia McBurroughs, a 23-year-old student at NJCU, was tragically stabbed in a home in Newark’s South Ward on Saturday, around 3:50 p.m.
She was found dead at the scene.
Authorities discovered five others in the home that were critically injured. They were all rushed to University Hospital, where early Sunday, two of the victims — children of 8 and 11-years-old — were pronounced dead.
Two 13-year-olds and the mother of the slain children, who were also victims of the stabbing, are in stable condition.
Jeremy Arrington, the only person of interest for the brutal stabbing at 137 Hedden Terrace, in Newark, was found Sunday night. He has not been charged, and further details regarding motive have not been disclosed. Arrington was also wanted for other unrelated crimes committed in early October.
McBurroughs was an Elementary and Special Education double-major and planned on graduating some time in 2017. She worked at the campus bookstore on Wednesdays.
“She was always smiling and had the warmest laugh. She was very giving and would give her last if she could. She helped her suite-mate through her pregnancy … we used to make sandwiches for the homeless and design shirts to raise breast cancer awareness — and forget about it if you were hungry and she knew that,” said James Stewart, a Graphic Design major, about his best friend. Nostalgia was continuously reflected in his speech as he shared stories about her. “If you got the chance to know Syasia McBurroughs, you got to know an angel, and she will truly be missed by everyone who knew her.”
Nesha Laguerre, alumni and former president of the Fashion Organization, stated that McBurroughs “was persistent and helpful. She was one of those individuals who [was deeply committed to] the program. She wasn’t even a full member when I started the organization, but she was always there — at the bake sales and fundraisers and events — supporting it. People like her don’t come around often.”
