NJCU Softball and Basketball Suffer Losses While Baseball Celebrates a Win in Florida

#NJCUSB Toppled to Clark & Kenyon
NJCU Softball faced Clark University and Kenyon College on March 4 in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. In Game 1, the Gothic Knights were unable to collect a win against Clark. Clark University won the game 10-1. NJCU received a run in the second inning, but that wasn’t enough to win. Pitcher Christina Mezey accumulated eleven walks and six strikeouts throughout the game.
In Game 2, the Knights faced Kenyon College. The team had a little more strength in the second game than the first. Hannah Gavin, Jamilet Leonardo, Mezey, and Dayanara Flores were hitting. A few players collected a hit (H) and at-bat (AB) no one received a run (R) or RBI. Mezey returned as pitcher and gathered two strikeouts, three walks, but allowed for three runs. Kenyon College won the game 3-0. NJCU will face Albion College and Drew University on March 5.
#NJCUBB Takes the Win in Season Opener
NJCU baseball kicked off the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a win. NJCU was scheduled to play SUNY Poly unfortunately weather-related flight changes occurred.
The Gothic Knights went on to face Pitt-Greensburg on March 4. The team unleashed five runs in the second inning and left the score at 6-2. Shining moments from Jesse Kraft, Lenin Gomez, Nick LoGatto, and Juan Pena when the Knights were batting. Each player made their own run (R), hit (H), at-bat (AB) and a few RBIs. As for pitching, Jose Ortiz, Dan Foley, Kyle Kafer and Kyle McCabe were able to strikeout and collect a win. The Knights achieved five consecutive hits in the second inning with the help from Gomez, Tom Pulcine, LoGatto, Pena and Kraft. The team picked up another run in the seventh inning which kept them in the lead by the end of the game. The Gothic Knight will face Emerson College on March 5 at 4p.m.
NJCU Men’s Basketball Eliminated at NCAA
NJCU men’s basketball headed to Plattsburgh, NY for the NCAA tournament on March 2 to play against Union College. This game was the Knights’ 20th appearance in the NCAA tournament, however they were eliminated in the first round when they took on Union College.
NJCU led the first half of the game at 45-34, Union did struggle in the beginning, but pulled through leading the score in the second half. The Knights struggled as well to make a comeback and were unable to advance in the tournament. Union took the win leaving the score at 76-72 and they will advance to play Plattsburgh State. Although the defeat, the game had some shining moments from Sam Toney, Shaquan Worthy, Lavrone Green, and Salomon Pierre. The Knights had an incredible 2017-18 season, so there is hope for next year.
