#NJCUSB Face Defeat Twice in NJAC Opener

NJCU Softball challenged Rutgers University (Camden) twice for the opening weekend of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) on March 31.

In Game one, the Gothic Knights earned three runs, six hits, and one error in total. Christina Mezey was game leader in pitching while Mezey, Julie Squeo, Hannah Gavin, and Kayla Clarke were game leaders in hitting. At the top of the third, Arianna Scrimo singled which permitted Dulce Almonte to score. Squeo earned two RBIs when she singled to left field which allowed for Scrimo and Arielle Cortes to score. The Gothic Knights maintained a two-point lead until the bottom of the sixth when Rutgers gained momentum and earned four more runs. NJCU was unable to make another run after the third and Rutgers won 5-3.

In Game two, the Gothic Knights attempted to seek redemption after suffering a loss in game one. The Gothic Knights earned three runs, seven hits, and zero errors. Christina Mezey was game leader in pitching while Mezey, Julia Squeo, Hannah Gavin, and Melissa Mendoza were game leaders in hitting. At the top of the sixth, Squeo grounded out which permitted Arianna Scrimo to score. Gavin singled to center field in the sixth which allowed for Mezey and Gianna Benacquista to score. The Gothic Knights maintained a tie until the bottom of the seventh when Rutgers scored a run. NJCU loss game two 3-4. NJCU softball is now 0-2 (win-loss) in the NJAC and 4-10 for the overall season.
