The John Moore Athletic Complex (JMAC) has gone through renovations this summer that amounted to $828,000. This included the retouching of the floors on the basketball court, which gives it that brand new feel and the acid washing of the tiles in the pool. Not to forget the reupholstering of any damaged equipment as well as touching up any chipped paint at the JMAC.
George Deaver, Assistant Director of the JMAC Management said “We need to keep the JMAC pristine for the students, faculty, and other members that utilize this gym.”
The gym is used by many NJCU students and staff that come in between or after classes to relieve some tension. The gym is also used by the University Charter High School for their gym classes during the academic year. With so much usage, Mr. Deaver believed it is something that needed to be done.
Along with the acid wash of the tiles the pool is also adding a chair lift in order to be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Implementing this, will allow the pool to be accessible to anyone. The tiles around the pool will be reground, allowing the pool to look fresh.
Mr. Deaver was very pleased with the renovations. “Absolutely. Makes this look a lot nicer. Makes it look a thousand times better.”
However, even with the new renovations this summer the gym can use some more improvement. For example, the basketball court in the summer only receives air from the outside, which can make the gym feel like a sauna if the temperature is too high.
Mr. Deaver said, “It would require them to put correct venting. For now, all we get is outside air.”
Mr. Deaver has advocated for a system that incorporates large fans hanging from the ceiling that will help monitor the temperature in the gym and keep it cool enough.
