As one of the most recognized and accomplished players to ever suit up for the Gothic Knights, Rebecca Satz, 22, media arts major from Morris Plains, wrapped up her career at NJCU ranking second in hits (188), doubles (50), batting average (.396), and third in home runs (16). Her journey would not stop there.
For Satz, it would take her to Boca Raton, FL for being selected to attend USA Baseball Women’s National Team Development Program.
Only 1 of 3 players from New Jersey were selected; and 1 of 34 players from 17 different states. The thought itself is truly overwhelming.
“This is a dream that I have had ever since I started playing baseball at the age of five,” Satz said.
Amidst her many accomplishments during her collegiate career, Satz was certain her talents would lead to greater opportunities.
“The fact it was baseball instead of softball came as a surprise though,” Satz said.
Due to constraints in the competitive world of sports, she was forced to transition over to softball as a child.
Satz capped off her senior year by receiving a confirmation of her invitation.
“I received the news in the middle of editing my senior project for my final senior thesis in the media arts department,” she said.
Satz received an official email from the Team USA coaching staff on December 15, 2013.
“I was initially in shock when I first read my congratulatory email but that quickly turned into excitement,” Satz added.
Upon her arrival to Boca Raton, the news kept coming as she learned the assistant coach stationed for her at baggage claim coached the 2009 gold medal 18u (under) team which featured MLB players Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals and Manny Machado of the Baltimore Orioles.
“I look up to Harper a lot so once he told me that everything became very surreal,” Satz said about learning her assistant coaches distinct resume. “I’m someone who’s used to being thrown a uniform top and some ripped up pants… now I have people taking pictures of me, choosing my jersey number, and other customized gear of my choice; it’s unreal.”
From hours spent training for the event to the actual Development camp itself, Satz gained more knowledge in all areas of the game, working with some of the best coaches in the sport of baseball.
“My goal is to pass on a lot of what I learned down to the kids that I coach that range from 8 to 16 years of age. I would eventually like to start my own 18u showcase baseball team that helps high school players get recruited to play for the college of their choice,” she added.
Grateful for having been selected and working with an elite coaching staff Team USA has ever had, Satz shares words of wisdom.
“If you have what it takes and you are dedicated and willing to put in the time and effort, anything you want or dream of can become yours,” she said of current players hoping to follow in her footsteps.
“Do not allow people to pressure you into choosing between baseball or softball. Times have changed a lot since I started playing,” she added.
Team USA now has a 16u and 12u female baseball team along with the Women’s National Team.
“There are plenty of little league organizations that actually encourage females to stay in baseball now and that was never the case when I was younger,” Satz said.
