We all know after having a long winter break that it can be difficult to get back into a new schedule. Most of us feel rusty. Some of us got used to sleeping in and others went to work, but did not have to deal with rushing to class and staying up late to get their homework done. Sigh. Well, now its back to business and most of you need help adjusting to this hectic lifestyle all over again. So here are a few tips that may help you get back on track.
Set goals: Did you accomplish what you wanted to last semester? Set some goals that are achievable and make moves to reach them. Reflect on what you could of done better on before winter break and work on improving that. If your grades were not what you wanted them to be it is time to reprioritize your schedule. Make a list of what you want to achieve and stick it on a bulletin or fridge as a daily reminder.
According to Forbes you should consider what you would stop doing to reach your goal. Yael Sivi, Managing Partner of Collaborative Coaching said, “If you’re setting a goal that involves doing a new activity (going to the gym, writing an article, taking a dance class) consider what you’re going to STOP doing in order to make room for the time you’ll need.”
Get organized: Create a schedule for your time over the semester. Make some time to do homework, laundry, cleaning, have a social life and all else that you need to do. Stick to this schedule as much as possible it will make your life a little easier. Use the planner on your Smartphone; it’s there for a reason.
Creating a to-do list lets us be reminded of what we need to do and being able to cross accomplish things off the list helps us feel we are making progress. Convince yourself that there is no room for procrastination.
Having a tidy area to work can also be very helpful, as well as a clean backpack. Treat this new semester as a fresh start.
Get involved: There are so many clubs to join at NJCU that I am sure that one will appeal to your interest. Joining a club is beneficial in many ways. It is a way to make friends and meet students who share the same interest, its great networking and it is something extra to add to your résumé. Visit njcu.edu to find out more about the different clubs and events NJCU has to offer.
Another way to get involved is to attend events on campus. There is always something going on so make time to attend a few. Follow us on Instagram @TheGothicTimes to find out what events are coming up or keep a look out for the flyers on bulletins all over campus.
Stay Active: Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should “give about two of them [that’s hours, people!], every day, to exercise; for health must not be sacrificed to learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.”
Some of us get so caught up with work, school and our social life we forget the importance of staying active. I don’t think I need to tell you the benefits of working out, but I will anyways! It helps with depression, relieves stress, adds energy and builds self-esteem. When on break, walk around campus or visit the campus gym and go for a swim, jog or hit the weights. It’s free! Just make sure to bring your Gothic Card with you.
