On February 28th, an infamous documentary that was aired on the History Channel, named “The Bible,” inspired a movie that is currently premiering, “Son of God.” This documentary showed a detail depiction of Jesus’ upbringing, teaching, hardships and his unique journey.
Directed by Christopher Spencery, a documentary enthusiast pioneered by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett’s creation, they took a ten-hour series and transformed it into a two hours and 18 minute film.
Diogo Morgado plays the role of the iconic Jesus of Nazareth, giving the historical character more understandable feel of how Jesus truly was.
Jesus, in the film and historically, travelled to many nations inspiring and building a faith driven peoples that will eventually change the world. His 12 disciples are undeniably the personas that we, as modern people have encountered in our lives.
Judas, the infamous backstabber, seems to be the biggest character, in this reviewer’s opinion, that is continually entering our lives. Peter, the Rock, claims friendship but is too ashamed to mention that he knows Jesus during the time of his trial. John, also known as the beloved, is always the reliable one, sticking with us through the thickest and thinnest of storms.
Ultimately, it’s not about the way Jesus dies that moves the twelve, but it’s about why he died. After the twelve witness Jesus’ resurrection it only bonds their goal to spread the word. The mission then and now as the movie paints beautifully is that as a whole, as a nation, as a race of all different ethnicities is the search for acceptance, peace, and tolerance.
This film, as whole, I think focuses on a subject that is incredibly charged. Invoking anything religious will automatically carry weight, some positive some negative, but overall, this movie showed the historical side. The side that we have records and manuscripts, which I believe gave this film a step up in terms of understanding an important part of history.
If you want to be moved spiritually and practically for the Lent season, the series as well as the movie will move you more ways than one.
