The union representing professors at NJCU, American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 1839, complains and pickets every time there is rumor of budget cuts. However, what they don’t seem to care about are rotten professors.
The union fights against layoffs, but never stops to consider the possibility that maybe some professors do need to be let go. There are professors on this campus who hide behind the safety of tenure and don’t care for students.
In a recent Gothic Times survey, 83 percent of students admitted to have cheated on a college exam. To some, this number may seem disturbing. However, when considering the fact that some students aren’t learning in classes, it’s no surprise they have resorted to cheating.
What the union needs to do is, just for a second, put down their picket signs and start evaluating their professors. They need to do this department by department, class by class, professor by professor. If the union really has student interests at heart, they need to address our issues, despite their personal opinions.
Hearing about the NJCU cheat rate isn’t troubling. What is troubling is hearing about sub-par professors teaching classes and getting away with it.
What’s even sadder is the administration’s attempt to hinder class evaluations done by students. The administration is trying to go green, making class evaluations online and not in the actual class. This greatly diminishes the number of responses done by students and is a step backwards in solving the issue.
Both the administration and the union are at fault.
