New Jersey City University is currently accepting online nominations for its 20th Athletics Hall of Fame induction class, scheduled to be honored during the 2014-15 academic year. The deadline for consideration is August 31, 2014.
The 20th Hall of Fame induction class will be determined by the University’s Hall of Fame selection committee during the Fall 2014 semester based on nominations received by the deadline.
Beginning with the class of 2014-15, the NJCU Athletics Hall of Fame committee has made a major change to the by-laws, allowing any team that has achieved significant success to be considered for induction. Previously, only national championship winning teams have been eligible under the ‘Team’ category.
Meanwhile, eligible candidates include NJCU student-athletes whose final year of sports participation was five years prior to the deadline (completed eligibility during the 2008-09 academic year) and have earned a degree from the University; an NJCU coach who has served at least five years at the school; a non-athlete/coach who has made significant contributions to NJCU Athletics; or individuals who participated in varsity athletics at NJCU and went on to outstanding sports careers after graduation.
Founded in 1979, the Hall of Fame is now home to 134 exceptional individuals and one team, and has featured 19 induction classes.
The last ceremony was held on April 5, 2013 and included women’s indoor/outdoor track and field national champion Andrea Herbert, `07; baseball pitching star John ‘Jack’ Nagurka, `87; men’s basketball 1,000-point scorer George Thomas, `04; All-American women’s bowler Jennifer Viens, `06, who was the first-ever bowler enshrined, and Mark Washington, `07, the fifth-leading scorer in program history. Herbert and Washington became just one of a handful of married couples in Division III history to be inducted into the same athletics Hall of Fame in the same class.
